Why Does Resanding Matter So Much After a Driveway Clean?

The Direct Answer

Block paving is not just sitting there under its own weight. The kiln-dried sand packed into every joint between the blocks is what locks them together and stops them shifting sideways under the weight of cars and foot traffic. A pressure wash, done properly or not, pulls a lot of that sand straight out of the joints. Skip putting it back and the blocks that were locked tight start to move, rock and eventually work loose.

What the sand is actually doing

• Locking the blocks together. Without sand in the joints, each block can shift independently under weight rather than the whole surface sharing the load.
• Keeping weeds and ants out. A properly sanded joint leaves far less room for either to get established.
• Stopping water getting underneath. Sanded joints shed surface water better than open ones, which matters for what is happening below the blocks over time.

What happens if it is skipped

Nothing looks wrong immediately. The drive looks clean and the colour is back. The movement starts gradually, usually first noticed as individual blocks that rock slightly underfoot or near a car's regular wheel path, and gets worse through a winter of frost and rain working into joints that should have been packed tight.
